How many bitcoins should you buy?

Not at all, if the purpose of your investment is only to secure a pension or to form a safety cushion in case of loss of employment. But there are good reasons to invest in bitcoin or other cryptocurrency, and it is up to you to determine if they are relevant to you. This is roughly what the distribution of cryptocurrency in your portfolio should look like depending on your investment objectives.

The prospect of low risk only adds to your excitement

Investing in bitcoin is a risk. Its course can take off or fall. There are many risky assets, but Bitcoin is particularly attractive because it is a phenomenon of its time that has a great future (most likely) ahead of it. Its presence in your portfolio will bring an element of risk, and it may well pay off, you know.

Some argue that the value of bitcoin is that it is not tied to any stock market, so it is able to diversify and reduce risk. There are reasons to be sceptical about this argument. Reliable evidence of correlation has been collected for decades and bitcoin only appeared in 2009. Since then, it has mostly thrived, but there have been misfortunes as well. We will not be able to determine whether Bitcoin will really help hedge stock market risks until assets begin to fall significantly and sustainably. Investing in crypt currency for the sake of diversification at this stage is for luck only.

Optimal share in your portfolio: 5-10%, depending on how ready you are to take the risk.

You feel uncomfortable in a world where there is no certainty, but there are large computing resources. The value of bitcoin can increase if the dollar collapses or high inflation occurs.

It may indeed make sense to diversify your foreign exchange savings, especially if you plan to move abroad one day. But you can do this with much less risk by buying any other government-supported currency. Of course, nobody has eliminated the risk of the financial apocalypse:

civilisation will collapse and all government-supported currencies will turn into ordinary papers. In this case, Bitcoin could become our main currency. However, the economy provided by Bitcoin will still need a good Internet – and it is not known what will remain of it if we have to survive something like the Hunger Games.

Optimum share in the portfolio: 0%, because we need to save money on medicines and canned food.

You put your privacy first or want to do something illegal.

One of the main advantages of cryptological currency is confidentiality. You can perform completely anonymous transactions (a function that credit cards cannot boast of). For some people confidentiality is really very important.

And if this is your priority, then cryptographic risks are the price you pay for anonymity. But keep in mind: Darknet sellers sometimes complain that bitcoin volatility is about to destroy their business.

Optimal share in your portfolio: 30-40%, depending on the volume of your transactions

Someone is blackmailing you or you want to be ready for this turn of events.

Relative anonymity of bitcoin has its downside. It is what criminals use to do their dark stuff. Hackers often demand a round sum in bitcoins from cyber victims. If you need to pay back, it is a good idea to stock up on bitcoins. It can act as insurance – which is not uncommon in our world.

Optimal share in your portfolio: 1-5%, depending on how likely the threat is

This Bitcoin fair launches its own hardware wallet with fingerprint scan

Cryptobeurs Gate.io comes up with a new product.

It is a separate hardware wallet that allows the user to act with extra security on the platform. The device is called the Wallet S1 and it offers extra security for the storage of private keys from, for example, Bitcoin.

Hardware wallet

Gate.io is located in Hong Kong. More than $63 million worth of different crypto coins pass through the order book every day. The stock market is striving to improve the security of customers‘ funds with this hardware wallet, writes Decrypt.

According to the release, the Wallet S1 is a solution for storing the private keys. The device even has a built-in display with fingerprint recognition. This gives each owner and customer a unique password. This way they don’t have to remember difficult passwords and the unique fingerprint is sufficient.

Signing orders

In a statement, Marie Tatibouet, the CMO of Gate.io, explains how it works:

„The private key is locked in the hardware itself, and therefore not in contact with the Internet. It makes it easier to sign certain things when the user is using it on a daily basis“.

She added that „it’s the first hardware wallet that uses an algorithm to detect brute-force attacks“. They also claim it’s the first hardware wallet with a fingerprint scanner.

Gate.io claims that the S1 supports over 10,000 cryptocurrencies. Of course, this is Bitcoin, but it also supports Ethereum and a lot of (other) altcoins that are not even on CoinMarketCap.

The intention is that this wallet will also work with DeFi apps and other applications that will be built on the proprietary blockchain at a later stage.

By the way: the device is initially only intended for customers from China. Users can synchronize the device with a laptop or Android smartphone. It is said to cost $50 each.

Buying bitcoin from wallet

The question is whether this approach will catch on, given that there are also regular hardware wallets that work with trade fairs. For example, with Ledger’s wallets you can use so-called AirSwaps to ’swappen‘ ERC-20 tokens.

For Bitcoin lovers, the Trezor option is much more interesting: you can buy Bitcoin directly at the Dutch fair BTC Direct.

SatoshiLabs previously rolled out a partnership with Changelly and CoinSwitch for purchases directly from the wallet. Since July this year, BTC Direct has also been included as a Dutch party.

Whether with or without a device, remember this motto: not your keys, not your coins. A hardware wallet from a trade fair can solve part of this problem, but with a wallet like Ledger or Trezor you can achieve exactly the same.

IOTA publishes final alpha version of IOTA Streams

IOTA has published the new version of its data transfer protocol IOTA Streams – and is laying another cornerstone for the decentralized data economy of tomorrow.

The IOTA Foundation has released the final alpha version of IOTA Streams

IOTA Streams is intended to enable the secure transfer of encrypted data and messages within the Tangle, IOTA’s disitributed ledger technology. This should set the course for the decentralized exchange of and trade in data in the Internet of Things. In contrast to cloud-based solutions, the data should remain in the owner’s possession until a buyer can be found.

If there is a device that produces data, then there is a good chance it is valuable to someone or something. This value must be included as close as possible to the point of data creation, because waiting until this happens in the cloud harbors a multitude of security risks, single points of failure and the potential for data theft and manipulation,

With the Crypto Bank wallet and arbitrage trading platform, thousands of investors earn passive income (10.8-45% per year). The fully automated crypto arbitrage platform offers low risk, high return investments. ArbiSmart is EU licensed and regulated.

The data exchange between network participants takes place via „channels“. In order to be able to access a data stream – for example from a network node that supplies sensor data – a user must know the name of the channel (Channel ID). A channel can support one (single branch) or several strands (multi branch) of data.

IOTA Streams is a second layer solution: This means that part of the authenticity check of the data takes place outside the Tangle. Among other things, this should enable a higher data throughput.

„Own your data“ IOTA streams for the responsible data producer

The IOTA Foundation provides a concrete use case in the blog post. IOTA cites the “Zero Dollar Car” as an example. This is a thought experiment by John Ellis, who was technology chief at the car manufacturer Ford.

Cars are currently being equipped with sensors that collect valuable information about the driver and the road conditions. What if the driver could exchange this information for money? This information could be so valuable that they could pay for the car,

Ellis describes the “Zero Dollar Car” in the blurb of the book of the same name.

In a TedX talk, to which the IOTA Foundation referred in their blog post, Ellis put the value of the data that an average family of four generates for Google in one year just from the use of laptops, smartphones and the like at US 5,500 -Dollar.

Technologies like IOTA streams can, according to the blog posthelp to ensure that data producers have a way of monetizing them in the future; especially when not only search queries but also sensor data from cars, refrigerators and the like can be sold.
